Bonsai is about patience. A tree is shaped over years, even decades, until it looks like a mature landscape in miniature. Seiko’s newest Presage limited edition borrows that idea and applies it to a watch dial.
What It Is
The watch is the Presage Classic Series Tradman’s Bonsai Limited Edition, reference HCC009J1. It is limited to 2,000 pieces and was created under the supervision of Tradman’s Bonsai, a creative collective that produces and curates bonsai spaces. The group was founded in 2015 and takes a modern approach to the craft, working with fashion, art and other cultures instead of treating bonsai as a museum piece.
The Story on the Dial
The concept is a Japanese black pine bonsai illuminated by the moon. It also draws on the crescent-shaped “moon” pot valued in bonsai philosophy, which represents harmony and the balance of yin and yang.
The dial translates this into texture and color. The surface is inspired by pine bark, which develops its character over time, and the green comes from matsuba-iro, a traditional color based on pine needles and long seen as a symbol of good fortune. Aging is the point of bonsai, so a dial that looks weathered and grown fits the theme better than a flat, glossy one would. Seiko Presage Bonsai
Green and gold tones form the minute track, and the only other decoration is an applied Seiko logo and the “Presage / Automatic 3 Days” text. That restraint lets the texture do the talking.
Gold Without the Glare
The case and bracelet are gold-tone, which adds to the elegant look. Seiko says the gold accents evoke the soft, diffused glow of moonlight. Gold and green can go wrong quickly, but a dark, textured dial gives the gold something to play against, so it reads as warm instead of showy.
Size and Build
The stainless steel case is 38mm wide and 12.9mm thick, with a sapphire crystal and 100 meters of water resistance. A 38mm case suits many wrists, and the water resistance is more than most dress-oriented watches offer. One reviewer described it as an unusual 38mm Presage with a richly textured dark green dial surrounded by a lot of gold.
The Movement
Inside is Seiko’s in-house 6R51 automatic, visible through the caseback, with a 72-hour power reserve. A UK retailer lists its accuracy as +25/-15 seconds per day. It is a familiar, dependable movement. The three-day reserve means the watch will still be running after a weekend in a drawer.
Packaging and Extras
A special presentation box was made exclusively for this edition, and an original watch cloth is included. One review also notes an additional strap embossed with a three-pronged pine motif. These small touches add to the sense of occasion that bonsai itself carries.
Price and Release
The US price is USD 1,350 for the September 2026 release. In the UK it is GBP 1,250, and in Australia AUD 2,100.
That is a lot for a watch with a 6R movement, and one reviewer noted that complaining about four-figure Seiko pricing has become an enthusiast pastime of its own. The same writer accepted that the price reflects where Presage now sits in Seiko’s lineup. In practice you are paying for the dial work, the collaboration and the limited run, not for movement specifications.
Who Should Consider It
This watch makes sense if you like green dials, appreciate Japanese design and want something that stands out from the usual dress watch. It is less suited to someone chasing the lowest price per feature, since other Presage models offer similar movements for less.
The story is rich, but you do not need to buy into it. As one review put it, the watch makes a convincing visual argument without requiring much buy-in from the surrounding story. The pine, the moonlight and the symbolism add depth, but the watch works on looks alone.
Final Thoughts
The Tradman’s Bonsai Presage shows what Seiko does best: taking a cultural idea and giving it a physical form you can enjoy up close. The textured dial, the traditional green and the warm gold case form a coherent whole, and the 38mm size keeps it wearable. Whether the price feels right is personal, but few watches this year tell their story so clearly through the dial alone.
